Current Projects: Creating Healthy Relationships

Introduction

There are many sources of stress and areas of disagreement that may cause tension and conflict in relationships. Therefore, the RRI is offering a 22-week workshop to provide couples experiencing conflict with tools and resources to help them better deal with conflict and more effectively solve problems. In addition to providing the workshop, the RRI would like to evaluate how each couple manages the stress and conflict in their relationship and how the way they do so affects their relationship and their child/children.

Participants Learn To

* Effectively resolve conflict and avoid harmful fights
* Strengthen relationship with your partner
* Engage with other couples

Description

The Creating Healthy Relationships Project is designed to evaluate a 22-week psycho-educational workshop designed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman for couples currently experiencing difficulty and conflict in their committed relationship. We are looking for couples who:

* Are in a committed relationship of 12 months or longer (married or unmarried)
* Are raising at least one child under age 13 (grandparents raising grandchildren are welcome)
* Make less than $73,260 for a family of 3 (higher limits for larger households).

The Project design places participating couples into one of two groups one group goes through the 22-week workshop series and the other gets written materials that include information on community resources. We will also be offering a special weekend workshop for couples that do not receive the 22-week workshop series after they have concluded their participation in the Project

Participants Receive

* Tools and useful information about how to improve conflict resolution and parenting
* Compensation for their time and involvement
* Referrals to community resources

Workshop

Many of the couples who participate in this project will attend a 22 week workshop with 6-8 other couples. Each week couples will talk together about topics relating to their every-day lives such as stress, conflict and parenting. In addition to discussions at each workshop participants will learn tools to help them strengthen their relationships, communicate effectively and resolve conflicts.
